ANSWER

My dog is not registered with the NKC. Can I still show him at this show?

Your dog may not be shown in any NKC event unless it is registered with the NKC.  But, that is easy to fix! You can visit www.nationalkennelclub.com to get the forms and instructions to register your dog.

Can I register my dog with the NKC on the day of the show?

Yes, but your dog must be registered with another registry recognized by the NKC, such as the ABA or UKC. You will fill out a registry form and must provide a copy of your dog’s other registration paperwork.

Can I enter my dog in a weightpull competition if we  have never done that before?

Yes! If you are interested in learning about and trying weightpull, you can enter the novice class.  The experienced weightpull judge and helpers will assist you with testing and evaluating your dog for this sport.

Will there be any temperament testing available?

Yes! On Friday, November 14, 2008, we will be offering several different types of testing.  From Canine Good Citizen (CGC) to WABA trials. We will also be offering working evaluations conducted by WABA helpers to help you determine your dog’s temperament for sport protection or other similar discliplines

My puppy will turn on year old on November 15, 2008. Which class do I show him in?

On November 15, 2008, your puppy will be judged in the Puppy Class 3 because he will be 12 months old.  On November 16, 2008, your puppy must be shown as an adult in the Junior Class.

What if I am not happy with the judge’s decision about my dog? Can I complain?

Absolutely not!  Just kidding. But be polite! Ask the judge BEFORE you leave the ring what he liked or disliked about your dog, or why he felt another dog was a better choice that day.  DO NOT try to ask the judge later -- he/she won’t remember your dog or the competition. All judges’ decisions are final. However, if you still feel a need to complain, you may contact the National Kennel Club and voice your concerns after the show is over.

How old does my dog have to be to trial or enter working events?

That depends.  For a CGC, your dog must be at least seven months old.  For other trials, the age ranges are from 12 months to 18 months, minimum, to trial. There may be other requirements, too.  For fun working events, such as sprint races, tug of war, etc., the age ranges for the competition may be specified, but otherwise, there is no age requirement. For weightpull, the minimum age for pulling in the novice class, but no points or titles are awarded unless a dog is 12 months old.

I want to trial my dog through the WABA.  How do I register?

You must contact the WABA, pay all fees, and turn in all paperwork required to trial your dog 14 days prior to the show.  For more information visit the WABA website at www.workingamericanbulldogassociation.com.

No.

No.  That is against NKC rules.

Can I bring items to sell at the show?

Does my dog need to be in a crate at all times?

Yes. Unless you are in the show ring or some other event, or on your way, your dog must be contained and under control at all times.  A leash must always be used, except in trials where leashes are not allowed.

Can I bring children to the show?

Of course. Children are always welcome, but are your responsibility.  Make sure you keep a close eye on them so they don’t get into situations where they could get hurt or damage the park property.  You are responsible for their actions. There is a playground at the park nearby (Pioneer Park) for “down time.”

What about food?

A local youth group will be offering breakfast for purchase. One half of the profit benefits the youth group. Beverages and snack items will be available all day. Lunch on Saturday will be available at the concession stand.  Of course you are free to leave the show site any time to purchase food offsite  if you prefer, or you are also free to bring your own picnic items. There are no grills at the rodeo grounds. On Saturday night we are planning a BBQ mixer with entertainment (hamburger/hot dogs).

Can I drink beer or any other beverage out of a glass bottle or container?

The club will secure a beer permit, so you will be allowed to bring beer onto the premises.  However, no glass bottles are allowed in the park.

Can any breed participate in the working events?

Yes. Only conformation competition is exclusively for American Bulldogs.  Protection Tournament, Iron Dog, Weightpull, etc. are open to all breeds, and participation by all is encouraged!

Who is going to clean up after all the dogs and show patrons?

We are hopeful that everyone will take responsibility and clean up after themselves and their dogs. There will be plenty of trash bins available for your use, and if you need “poop bags” we’ll have a supply of those on hand, too!  We will appreciate everyone’s help keeping the grounds clean for everyone’s enjoyment.
